Macro lenses for machine vision
A macro lens images a small object large: the field of view is comparable to the sensor itself. This is how connector contacts, solder joints, engraving and cutting-tool edges are inspected. Working distances across the range run from 59 to 550 mm depending on the version and the chosen magnification; focal lengths from 25 to 75 mm. A regular lens with an extension ring reaches a similar scale, but a macro lens is designed for exactly this.

How to choose
The key parameter here is magnification rather than focal length: it sets how much of the part fits in the frame, and it changes together with working distance — the table below lists them as a pair. Depth of field at this scale is small, so the object must be flat and firmly fixed.
